too cool for school

September 7, 2011

Hello, Dear Readers!

I hope you had a wonderful summer! I’m extending my vacation until the end of September when the season officially ends. (That is, we’re enjoying blades of grass for a few more weeks, doing autumnal country activities like antiquing, apple picking & hayrides before heading back home to our beloved city.)

Of course, I couldn’t help but get into the psychological end-of-summer, back-to-school, Labor Day shopping deals this past weekend & in keeping with annual tradition, baby & me got some new kicks! I love the Cole Haans so much that I wear them around the house like slippers. The Campers hopefully will get the little one—who walks & runs everywhere, indoors & out—through fall & winter (& early spring, but I’m probably pushing my luck).

I also received a few goodies when I hair modeled last week. I love this new product Texture that I hope makes my autumn do look like Edythe’s. (Now I’m on the hunt for a new hairdryer & diffuser. Any suggestions?)

I also bought some new fall make-up: RMS “un” cover-up #11, lip2cheek in illusive & cream eye shadow in seduce (I’m a sucker for the product names & 11 is my favorite #), all purchased from my go-to make-up bar, Wonderland; & Jurlique rose silk finishing powder, which luxuriously sets the creamy make-up without feeling too heavy or cakey. (Their $6.50 Love Balm is a great everyday alternative to Dr. Hauschka’s smaller, pricier lip balm, which I use before bed; apparently, Dr. H worked with Jurlique to develop their line, so there are some wonderful similarities between the products.) You can check out my Pinterest boards for other fall looks.

Lastly, two annual activities this upcoming weekend that I will have to participate in spirit from the countryside: Fashion’s Night Out tomorrow (my portrait on the About page was drawn by Bruno Grizzo at the first FNO a few years ago) & watching the final weekend of the US Open in Madison Square Park.

My FNO NYC picks: The Hester Street Fair at Henri Bendel’s & the block party in my hood on Christopher Street with A Man and A Womanalbertine & more. Let me know if/what you’re attending & have fun!

shining star

August 15, 2011

My sister, almost seven years my senior, has always been more glamorous than me. She was a teenager in the 80s after all. Like Mema, she’s always got her hair, make-up & nails done just so & she’s got the softest skin from years of using her lotions & potions. When we were younger, we’d spend hours in the bathroom tweezing our eyebrows, popping (my) zits, lining our eyelids & curling our lashes; she forced me to shave my hairy legs in the fifth grade. She loves her high heels & purple is her favorite color (it permeates her wardrobe, home decor & even her car).

Today’s her birthday & as far as she’s concerned, it’s a national holiday. She celebrates for the entire month of August & never works on her special day—she’s been poolside all day today before heading out for cocktails with friends. I’m so happy we were able to spend the past week together at our favorite beach, doing our favorite sisterly activities: reading gossip magazines in our sand chairs, refreshing ourselves with Italian ice in the afternoons, watching trashy TV after sunset & eating our favorite birthday cake (sometimes for breakfast).

Happy birthday, Hope!
